Owners Comments

HISTORY:

Richard Courage, king of beer in Britain, dynamic heir to the family business founded in 1787, commissioned the famous naval designer Fred Parker in 1954 to design a medium size boat to be built by the best shipwrights and with the best materials and able to sail around the world even at the high latitudes of the Northern and Southern Oceans. She was christened "Barleycorn" - a very apt name.

"Barleycorn" was built as an One Off at Waldringfield on the River Deben near Ipswich in 18 months by the Nunn Brothers who were then considered by Fred Parker to be superior shipwrights to Lallows in Cowes and C&N in Gosport, and so the small yard was chosen by Courage. Enest Nunn boatyard was a phenomenally well regarded builder of racing boats, especially International Fourteens, International Canoes and Dragons. She was launched in 1956. In the same year and in 1957 the boat took part in RORC offshore races and came second in the Harwick-Hook (Holland).

In 1973 the boat passed into the hands of her current owner, a Neapolitan gentleman who was a lawyer in England and renamed her "Amarapura". The name is very evocative as "Amarapura" was the "sacred and immortal city" of Burma in honour of the best teak of Burma out of which this fine yacht was built. The owner is an experienced sailor, he has crossed the Atlantic, sailed the Pacific and Cape Horn in his life. He donated the plans and complete design to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for their collection of the designs of F.R. Parker.

He sailed with "Amarapura" as far as the Mediterranean where the yacht sailed for many years. Maintained by the prestigious Nino Aprea shipyard in Naples, the boat then sailed backand has now been based in the UK for many years. The owner, although not a young man, cruised to the Lofoten Isles in northern Norway in 2020. Since autumn 2021 Amarapura has been based at a marina in Ipswich and used for local cruising.
